Summer Reading : A Few of My Favorites (what are yours?)

I have to admit, this summer is the first in several years that I have had a chance to do any summer reading at all! The past four summers were completely consumed with taking care of babies, and so it has been a refreshing treat to have a bit more time to read this year.

"The Summer Book" by Susan Branch is one of my all time favorites, and is one of the few books that I brought to Germany from the US when I moved 14 years ago. I love Susan's combination of illustration, recipes, personal stories, and tips for enjoying seasonal domestic comforts.

This recipe for Lavender Tea Cookies - sugar cookies with a bit of dried lavender in the dough - is amazing! Susan has a lovely website and always has fun things to say on Twitter, so be sure to go over and visit her :)

A new discovery for me this summer was Sarah Ban Breathnach's "Simple Abundance." Oprah said this was her favorite book in 1996, and since then it has been a worldwide bestseller - so most likely it is not new to you.

The book is written like a day to day journal, but I skipped ahead and devoured the entire month of July, which is filled with quotes and many delicious cookbook tips from the author. A yummy read.

Another treat has been SARK's "Make Your Creative Dreams Real." Years ago, a college roommate insisted that I read her copy of SARK's first book "A Creative Companion."  I found it quite entertaining and charming, but those days I spent more money on art supplies than books. (Probably I still do, but I have come to appreciate having a personal creative library over the years.)

How nice it was then to somehow stumble upon SARK's collection of more recently published books, and see that she is absolutely going strong these days - with ecourses, workshops, a true bundle of energy. I believe her books are so successful and inspiring because she shares her personal stories so openly, and is completely convinced of her mission to help others find and realize their creative potential.

What's on your summer reading list? I would love to hear about the books that are inspiring you these days. I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do!

I wish you a wonderful weekend!
