a warm kitchen, gingerbread, and fairy tales...

I'm afraid that I've been neglecting my blog lately - mostly because we have been busy baking, decorating, and enjoying the sights, smells, and tastes of the holiday season here in Germany.

One day, we had a "gingerbread party" in the kitchen. We baked gingerbread men and decorated them after reading the story of The Gingerbread Man.

The adults enjoyed some mulled wine, the kids had spiced apple cider, and we baked Jennifer's delicious gingerbread recipe that she shared with us last year for the Artist Advent Calendar here.

The following day, the girls decorated a gingerbread house.

We started this tradition last year, and they love it. We used a kit, but if you are feeling ambitious, you could always bake the gingerbread yourself.

This was our final result, complete with paper cut-outs of Hansel and Gretel and the witch - and a few decorated gingerbread men standing guard, all standing proudly in royal icing "snow".  You can click here to see our gingerbread houses from last year (and get my fool-proof icing recipe).

I hope you are also having fun and taking time to enjoy the festivities during this busy season. This morning I went to a cafe to write Christmas cards, and I really enjoyed myself. Sometimes it's so easy to make everyday activites special. What holiday traditions have you been enjoying lately?
