Several years ago, a mom of three young children confided to me that she hadn't had much time to read since having kids. I remember thinking "Oh no! Well I certainly hope that will never happen to me!"
But it did. The first months and even years after Sophia and Lucy's births were so completely consuming, it truly was a challenge to have a coherent thought or even to complete a sentence, not to mention sitting down to read an entire book for pleasure.
Now that they've grown and I have a few free hours each day, I am delighting in reconnecting with books. Books are true "soul food" for me; they nourish me in ways that nothing else can. Don't get me wrong - I also love visiting personal blogs and websites and seeing/reading about what others are doing and making. The Internet is fascinating, exhilarating, but sometimes exhausting. Call me old-fashioned, but one of my favorite things to do is to curl up with a book in my hands - a real book - and lose myself in its words and pictures. I also enjoy having a date with a good book in a cafe or going off to read and sketch on a blanket in the park.
We installed new bookshelves in my studio this week in an attempt to manage my growing "inspiration collection." It felt so nice to organize them and think about what I want to read next.
What are you reading right now? Do you still have an occasional love affair with a book? Do you have a favorite place to read?
